The origins of the prehistoric Stonehenge monument on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, are shrouded in mysteries. The famous site consists of an outer ring of vertical standing stones, topped by connected horizontal stones. A smaller ring of stones is found inside the ring. The stones that form this wondrous structure came from a site in what is now Wales, some 150 miles away. The monument has deteriorated over the years, but we know that it faced the sunrise and is at the center of other Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments harboring many burial mounds. The construction of Stonehenge was estimated to have started around 3100 BC. It was done in different stages, with building lasting until 1600 BC. Though the site has fascinated scholars and laypeople alike and researchers are constantly proposing new theories of how the ancient builders transported the stones, we still do not know why it was built and why the builders chose to transport those stones to Wiltshire. However, some of the mystery around the origins of the iconic sites were resolved in 2019 when the first genomic sequences of the ancient Stonehenge Neolithic and Bronze Age societies were sequenced. With the information at hand, we can finally answer questions like, who were the Stonehenge masons? Where did they come from? What were their relationships with the local populations? How similar are they to modern English populations? And what was their genetic legacy?
